Another amazing result from this year's Handbags for Hospice event.
The power of the purse was never more evident than it was on Friday night in Woodstock.
The total is in from the 4th annual Handbags for Hospice event in Woodstock, and over $105,000 was raised in one night for the VON Sakura House, which is Oxford County's only residential hospice. One of the event founders and organizers, Leslie Farrell announced the grand total on Heart FM this morning at $105,111.79.
Farrell says it's just the latest example of how generous a community Oxford County is, "The VON has had a few challenges in the last couple of weeks with our flood, and whether it's just 'What can I do to help?' or 'Here's a way I can help' it just blows me away time and time again, and I say this and I truly mean it...what a great community to live in, and raise a family in."
Another event organizer, Kyra McNamara tells Heart FM the most inspirational part of the event was the sea of hands that went up from those who were willing to make a personal donation to Sakura House. "We had the goal of raising enough money to recover and replace some of our recliner chairs, there's one in each patient room. We ended up raising over $18,000 for that project. The feeling of seeing so many hands raised up in the air, just willing to donate, not even walking away with a purse, but in that moment, truly being there for the hospice."
Over the event's 4-years, over $285,000 has been raised for Sakura House.
And ladies can mark their calendars - the 5th annual is already set for January 23rd, 2015.
