Rise in Fox Sightings

Woodstock citizens have reported an increase in fox sightings in the area. Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry Management Biologist Kristen Diemer has a possible explanation.

WOODSTOCK- You may have noticed an increase in fox sightings in the City of Woodstock and surrounding residential areas. Although there are no statistics to compare if population numbers are up, Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry Management Biologist Kristen Diemer has some ideas about the increase in sightings. 

"More foxes may be observed at once during the breeding season like now when young are with their parents."

Diemer adds that there are usually about 6 kits born to each breeding pair.

"...The male and female stay together and help raise the young and in the fall the family will disperse and they will become solitary and forage more so on their own so this time of year you might see more foxes together because of family groups."

Foxes by nature are not typically bold creatures, however if they have found a reliable food source they might not be discouraged by people.

"Generally pretty shy, secretive and nervous animals but when they seek out food and shelter they might come more into residential areas and find sources of food and over time this can make them less fearful and a bit more bold in their attempts to get more food and shelter."

Most of the time animals are attracted into city centres and residential areas by food garbage. You can prevent animals from getting into your garbage by ensuring garbage is stored in bins with lids or by keeping them in your garage.
