September is Big Brothers Big Sisters Month

You can help make sure youth in the community have a mentor as Big Brothers Big Sisters of Oxford County is celebrating Big Brothers Big Sisters Month.

OXFORD - Big Brothers Big Sisters of Oxford County would like to turn the town Teal and Orange!

It is Big Brothers Big Sisters Month, and Volunteer and Engagement Coordinator Erica Hughes explains what the month is meant to do.

"This is to bring attention to the need for mentorship, what we do, and the power that we can create with mentoring in our community."

To mark the occasion, BBBS Oxford will be holding flag-raising ceremonies on Monday, September 14th, ahead of Big Brothers Big Sisters Day on September 18th. The ceremonies will be at 10:00 a.m. at the Oxford County Administration Building in Woodstock, 10:30 a.m. at Museum Square in Downtown Woodstock, and 1:00 p.m. at Oxford-Broadway Parkette in Tillsonburg.

Also, this year, the agency has partnered with Two Row Creeations to encourage local businesses to display orange decorations, and Hughes says why that was an important piece to add.

"This year we have included orange in recognition of National Day of Truth and Reconciliation at the end of the month."

National Day of Truth and Reconciliation always falls on September 30th, and it honours residential school survivors and their family members. Big Brothers Big Sisters is offering free decoration kits for interested businesses, and all you have to do is fill out the form online here.

During the month, you will be able to help support the organization as they will be hosting a 50/50 raffle with tickets costing $10 for 5, $20 for 50, $50 for 150, and $75 for 400. Ticket sales will close at the end of the day on September 30th, and the draw will take place on October 1st. Tickets for the 50/50 draw can be purchased online. Donations are also being accepted during the month, and POW Engineering has said they will match all donations up to $4,000.
