The students at St. Mary's high school know that all too well, distracted driving can have life-changing consequences. That's one of the reasons why a couple of students have produced a video that tries to drive the message home. Abbie Goulet and David Katarzynski have entered a video produced for a Communications Technology class project -- called "Focus Forward" -- into a contest run by All-state Insurance. Katarzynski talks about the reaction the video has received from other students. "Everyone is kind of accepting the video in the fact that, 'Yes, you know, we do that, we shouldn't be, we've got to do something to change'. There was an accident that happened with one of the students here that sadly passed away because of texting and driving. It's kind of opened their eyes to recognize what they're doing isn't right and that something has to be done to change it and hopefully that is sending the message out correctly." In the video, as the driver receives text messages, the text bubbles appear on the screen, obstructing the driver's view of the road. Abbie Goulet says it's a visual illustration of the distractions phones can have. "There are people that just text at all the stop signs and all the stop lights. It's extremely dangerous because that could lead to accidents. If you see in our video there's a crash at the end, obviously the crash sound is a little dramatic, but it could happen." You can help the students win the All-State contest by voting for their video. They can win $1000 for their school, and $1500 for themselves, that they say will go towards their education.
