Nominations are being accepted to the Woodstock Sports Wall of Fame in several categories from Athletes, to Builders, and Lifetime Achievement
Nominations are being accepted for the Woodstock Sports Wall of Fame located at Southwood Arena.
Mark Schadenberg, the Chair of the Recreation Advisory Committee, says they have accepted nominations for the wall every year for the past 20 years.
"We take nominations at any point in time but there is a deadline each and every year. This year June 30th is the deadline and sometime in July we will take a look at those that are nominated this year in the seven categories and decide who is best for this year's ceremony which will be the last Saturday of October."
Schadenberg tells us about some of the athletes who are currently on the wall.
"Some of the names that jump off the page for me for example are Brian Paton who's on the World Sports Wall of Fame for fastball. Catherine Bond-Mills, who is a former Olympian from Woodstock and heptathlon in track and field, and a lot of people that are long time coaches and also athletes. For example Jake Muzzin won a Stanley Cup and he was on the Sports Wall of Fame in the Honourable Recognition category."
The Recreation Advisory Committee is also looking for more information about the teams and athletes currently on the wall, Schadenberg explains why.
"There's now going to be a touch screen kiosk installed in the foyer in Southwood Arena. That's something the Recreation Advisory Committee has been working on quietly for a number of years and one of the reasons it has been done quietly is because we are trying to compile more biographical material on people."
If you have information on someone who has already been inducted on the Wall of Fame contact someone from the City of Woodstock.
There are seven different categories people can be nominated for:
- Male Athlete
- Female Athlete
- Team (usually a provincial champion)
- Lifetime Achievement
- Builder of Sport (usually a coach or chair person)
- Historic (anything before 1970)
- Honourable Recognition
