Thames Valley Promoting Waste Reduction

The Thames Valley District School Board is taking part in "Waste Reduction Week". The school board is challenging staff and students, to find alternatives to paper to reduce their waste. Christine Holmes, Learning Coordinator at the Thames Valley District School Board, says we may need to use paper, but we should be thinking about it before we do. "There are times you have to print paper. It may be regulated by the government...or whatever it may be. We just want people to think about it before you go printing everything." Holmes says the students are also being encouraged to take the message of waste reduction home. "Stressing more reduction, not just in the classroom, but at home. In what you're buying, and avoiding plastic water bottles, and using re-usable bags and things like that." Schools will also be conducting a "waste audit," where the staff and students will be sorting garbage and recycling. Also, the class that recycles the most batteries this week will win a pizza party. Waste Reduction Week leads into Earth Week, which runs April 22nd to the 26th.
