The Woodstock Fire Department are also recommending you to check the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
OXFORD COUNTY - Woodstock Fire is reminding everyone to check their emergency kits and alarms when you change the clocks.
Public Information Coordinator Lisa Woods says this is the time to check those life saving devices. "We have to check our alarms. Both our carbon monoxide and our smoke alarms, check the batteries, change the batteries - doesn't matter if you've changed to batteries this year. We want to change them when we change the clocks twice to keep them fresh and up to date. So definitely check all the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms."
Woods says even if you have the lithium powered alarms, they still need to be checked and tested. "We still want you to check them - you can lightly vacuum them and dust them, make sure the light is still on. Yes the 10 year lithium battery is supposed to last the life of the actual alarm but test regularly as well, so this weekend is a good time to test that and give it a quick vacuum - make sure it's dust free."
This is also the time to check your emergency supply kits. These supplies should be able to get you through 72 hours in case of an emergency. Woods says there is one item in particular people tend to overlook: "Cash is one of those things because we're a debit and credit card world these days you forget that if we have a major catastrophe in Woodstock then debit machines will be down, so you may need cash to buy those immediate items like water and food products if we're without debit for too long."
