"The tragic shooting death of 20 children at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut on Friday has shocked and saddened everyone. Thames Valley District School Board Psychologist Sally Christensen has advice for parents whose children may have questions about this horrific event: ? Try to reduce exposure to violence and traumatic events in the media. ? If your children overhear or see reports about the event, answer their questions with straightforward, honest and factual information. ? Remind children that most people do not hurt others. Only a few people whose minds are not working properly do hurtful things. ? It's okay to express your sadness and shock that bad things do sometimes happen. ? Avoid repeated listening or watching traumatic events as is it can traumatize those who have not directly experienced the events. ? Ensure your children feel safe and let them know that you and their teachers do everything they can to keep them safe. ? Do nurturing things together, such as cuddle up, nibble snacks and watch a feel good movie. Thames Valley District School Board's Traumatic Events Response Team (TERT) is monitoring this tragic event and will be available to offer support to schools on Monday as necessary."
