When the dust settled on a weekend of women's fastball in Innerkip, everybody won. 17-thousand dollars was raised at this year's Gord Marshall Memorial Fastball Tournament in Innerkip. That money goes towards cancer research, in memory of Gord Marshall, who lost his battle with cancer in 2003. The renowned Innerkip athlete and umpire is fondly remembered by those that run the tournament in his name, including Kyle Smith. "It's a fundraiser for cancer, but also an opportunity for us to pay respects to a great man, who we lost far too soon." His wife, Judy Marshall is at the tournament each and every year. "He would be honoured knowing that what he died from, hopefully someday can be cured." President of the local Cancer Society Council, John Hunt received the cheque on behalf of the organization. "Can't thank them enough and I know they're already working towards far exceeding their goal next year." And with 92-thousand dollars raised in the tournaments 9-year history, organizers will be right back at it, planning on the 10th edition, with a target of 100-thousand dollars in their sights. On the diamond, the Byron Blaze captured the Tier 2 title beating runner up Otterville. In Tier 1 play, the Whitby Eagles won 9-2 over the Guelph Gators in 6-innings.
