The Alzheimer's Society of Oxford would like to help those impacted by memory loss this Alzheimer's Month.
It's Alzheimer's Month and the local Alzheimer's Society is encouraging those impacted by memory loss to contact them.
The Oxford branch works to help not only those who have been diagnosed with Alzheimer's, dementia or mild cognitive impairment; but also their family members and loved ones.
Executive Director Shelley Green says they offer programs and services for every stage of the disease, ranging from before diagnoses until after death.
"Every stage along the way we have educational programs and we have support groups. We have a volunteer companion program where we allow trained volunteers go out and provide companionship and a relief from care giving for the family member."
Although their staff members can't officially provide a diagnosis, Green says they can help you determine if you should seek further help.
"Our staff will make it very comfortable for you. They'll talk about some of the things you are concerned about and then they'll discuss whether or not it makes sense for you to pursue a diagnoses or pursue some medical assessment to find out whether or not in fact this is dementia, normal aging or something else."
Green says the early stages of Alzheimer's or dementia is more than just forgetting why you walked into a room. It's the inability to recall and forgetting that you forgot something. Possible signs also include changes in personality and the inability to do something you are regularly very familiar with.
