The Oxford Attack U14 girls had a strong showing at an OBA sanctioned tournament in Brampton this weekend.
The Oxford Attack Under-14 Major Bantam Girls team finished with a 2-2 record for a 5th place finish in tough Division 3 out of 10 divisions at their provincials championships in Brampton over the weekend. The Attack girls placed 21st out of 80 U-14 girls team in the entire province.
The Attack girls opened pool play against the eventual silver medalist Mississauga Knights. They were behind the entire game but made a late run in the 3rd quarter to pull within 2 points. The Knight full court press, however, was too much for the Attack to overcome as the Knights held on to win 46-34.
The Attack next faced their nemesis the Ancaster Blitz. The girls had defeated this resilient squad twice earlier in the season by less than 5 points in each game. Their provincial game was also a hard fought battle as the Attack girls were down 19-8 in the second quarter and struggled with their offense. In the second half the Attack’s full court arrow press began to wear down the Blitz and the Attack capitalized on many Blitz turnovers to score crucial baskets to catch up and eventually pass the Blitz late in the 4th quarter. Late free throws sealed the Attack comeback for an exciting 39-34 win.
The Attack completed pool play with a lethargic loss to the London 86ers 42-28. Unfortunately the girls were flat and lacked energy the entire game and could not solve the 86ers press.
The Attack moved to the 5th-6th place game on Sunday and faced the Burlington Force. Their defense was spectacular all game long holding the Force to 7 points at half time with the Attack netting just 11 for a low scoring defensive game. The game opened up more in the second half with both teams full court pressing to generate turnovers and easy baskets. The Attack held on for an electrifying 30-28 win to finish their provincial championship weekend with a respectable 2-2 record in a tough Division 3 grouping.
The Attack U-14 girls finished their successful season with a 28-10 record.
