The Woodstock Fire Department have created a new video to showcase the dangers of the "Silent Killer"
WOODSTOCK - If a carbon monoxide leak happened in your home, do you know what steps would be taken?
A unique video outlining what actually happens has been made to help raise awareness about Carbon Monoxide.
The video was created by the Woodstock Fire Department in house, in a joint effort with Woodstock General Hospital and Oxford county paramedics. It was created with a different approach in mind; to show who would be involved in responding to a leak.
Lisa Woods, Public Information coordinator talks about what would happen if you did experience a leak.
"Yes, you would be taken to the hospital, yes, you would be monitored, there is a possibility that you would have to go for further treatment into Hamilton or Toronto to a hyperbaric chamber, these are the people involved and these are their roles."
Carbon monoxide alarms are now mandatory in Ontario homes. In October 2014, the Ontario Government implemented a new law making carbon monoxide alarms mandatory in all Ontario residences. The Ontario Fire Code requires detectors to be installed near all sleeping areas in homes with fuel-burning appliances, such as furnaces, stoves or fireplaces. It also applies to all homes with attached garages.
Woods adds simple things can be the difference between life or death.
"First is to have all your furnaces and fuel fired appliances maintained by a service contractor every year, as your first defence. Your second would be to have a carbon monoxide detector in your home."
Carbon Monoxide is known as ‘The Silent Killer’, as it can not be seen, you can not taste or or smell it. Detecting the deadly gas can only be achieved with a carbon monoxide detector.
