Membership is on the rise at the Woodstock YMCA. An expanded fitness centre, gymnasium refurbishment, and a pool refurbishment are just some of the improvements made by the YMCA that are contributing to the rise in membership. The YMCA received a five year 500,000 dollar grant from Woodstock City Council last year, to help pay down the $3-million in renos. On Thursday, CEO of the Western Ontario YMCA Shaun Elliot made a presentation to council about the impact that funding has had. Elliot says it's virtually a brand new building inside, and they don't turn anyone away. "There is a lot of success stories, including one individual who brought in her kids who normally wouldn't participate and would get into trouble in school, but then all of a sudden being involved in activities on a regular basis left them no time to get into trouble," said Elliot. Prior to the renovations, membership was stagnant, sitting at around 2500 members. Today, the YMCA is just shy of 3300 members but Elliot says there is always room for more members especially kids. Their membership goal is 4000.
