Eighteen community groups got a helping hand from Council Thursday when over 128 thousand dollars worth of grant money was handed out. Councilor Paul Plant says one of the biggest grants handed out was 15 thousand dollars to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Woodstock. "Basically for funding recreational, physical fitness, sports activities and giving them ways to improve communication skills, team building, things like that." Plant says the city still has around one hundred thousand dollars in grant money that can be handed out. He says any group that feels they have a worth while cause should contact the Clerk's office for guidelines and an application. Woodstock - $4,000 - To build a Youth Teaching Square for skills development. Fanshawe Singers - Woodstock (Honour Choir) - $2,500 To assist in the payment of a director, accompanist, music and performance facility. Fanshawe Singers - Woodstock (Kaleid Choral Festival) $15,000 - To hire Canadian guest artists and to fund marketing Ontario Genealogical Society (Oxford County Branch) $2,000 - Operating expenses Oxford County Athletics (Woodstock Legion Athletic Club) $10,000 -Offset wages and travel expenses of Day Camp coaches -Offset the cost of travel expenses to Provincial and National meets -Pay for advertising campaign in the What's On Woodstock Magazine -Assist athletes with the cost of meet fees Oxford Historical Society $1,500 - Rent Rotary Club Festival of Music $2,500 -Scholarship money to winner for further study -Registration for participants to attend provincial competition -Funds to assist in operation of the 2012 Festival Santa Clause Parade 2012 Parade $7,500 - Expenses Skating Club $1,550 - Woodstock Ice rental and Goff Hall rental for a one day Special Olympics competition. South Western Aquatics $5,000 - Training Program upgrade and a Recruitment Campaign United Way of Oxford $20,000 A one-time Special Grant to help offset the cost of hiring a qualified trainer to train staff, member agencies & volunteers on how to use the new Andar 360 database/community impact software system. UPROAR Kids $2,000 To operate a four day summer camp for financially disadvantaged children at Southside Park. Woodstock District Developmental Services $10,000 For the Youth Summer Camp 2012: Supporting young people with developmental and physical disabilities. Woodstock Minor Baseball $12,000 For youth player development and coach development. Youth Quest Activity Centre $10,000 For a 48 Week Creative Arts Program. $10,000 TOTAL $128,050.00 **This money comes from the city's portion of OLG slot machine revenues.
