Parkinson's Walk Returns to Oxford County

A fundraising walk will be hitting the trail at Roth Park in Woodstock this weekend.

WOODSTOCK - Lots of people will be hitting the Roth Park trail in Woodstock, all in support of the Parkinson Society of Southwestern Ontario.

The Oxford County Walk for Parkinson's will be taking place on Sunday, with registration starting at 1 and the walk getting underway at 2:00 p.m. They will also have live music and a cornhole tournament on site to add that extra bit of fun to the day.

Community Engagement Coordinator Kendra Stapleton says the money raised will be put to good use.

"The Walk for Parkinson's is the biggest fundraising event that our organization does every year, and all of the funds that are raised stay 100 percent local to the region. We are regional across all of southwestern Ontario, so all of the funds go back into support programs for people who have Parkinson's and their families."

The local Walk for Parkinson's is looking to raise $23,500 this year. You can register the day of, or you can register online here in advance to collect pledges ahead of time.

Parkinson's disease is a progressive brain disorder that affects the nervous system and body movements. Stapleton says it affects more people than you may think.

"There's about 110,000 people with Parkinson's disease in Canada as of 2021. Just about half, so we figure about 46,000 people live with Parkinson's in Ontario alone. So it affects quite a big number of folks."
