Parks and Recreation Staff have prepared a report asking City council to completely ban all smoking and vaping of tobacco and cannabis at every City owned Park and Trail in Woodstock.
WOODSTOCK - Woodstock City Council will be take a look at smoking and vaping at City Parks on Thursday night.
Parks and Recreation staff with the City of Woodstock have prepared a report asking council to consider a by-law that would ban smoking and vaping tobacco along with cannabis at all City Parks and Trails. The Smoke Free Act currently makes it illegal to smoke tobacco, cannabis and vape at all recreation facilities in the Province and within 20 metres from the property lines. This Act also has a 20 meters setback from all playgrounds and sporting areas including spectator areas.
The City of Woodstock council is being asked to take this a step further and ban all smoking and vaping from City Parks and trails. The Staff recommendation to City Council is to blanket smoking prohibitions to all Parks and Trails. Staff will provide Council with alternative motions should Council wish to move an alternative option.
Council may also, at a future date, consider permissions for the consumption of alcohol in public parks and spaces. The Provincial Budget announced in its recent budget that it will introduce legislation to permit municipal governments to designate public areas, such as parks for the consumption of alcohol.
