"We haven't had any complaints or incidents in the City of Woodstock in regards to Clowning."
WOODSTOCK - Woodstock Police have not had any complaints or incidents in the City in regards to clowning.
The message comes out after both local School Boards posted messages on their web site yesterday after students received threats via text message. The warnings we're on the Thames Valley District School Board Web Site and the London District Catholic School Board web sites. Both school boards serve Oxford County, however there is no reason to believe any of the threats were received by students in the County. Most of the threats were in the London area.
Clowning has become something of an epidemic across North America recently. Several clown sightings have popped up south of the border and in Canada. Threats have been made to schools and people have taken videos of clowns in neighbourhoods scaring children and grown ups alike. It is a disturbing trend sweeping the continent right now.
Constable Nikki VanLeeuwen says they are taking this issue seriously and she hopes we don't end up seeing any creepy clowns in Woodstock.
"I think what is happening is school boards and police are very cautious and very protective of our communities, especially are young people. That being said at presence we haven't had any complaints or incidents in the City of Woodstock in regards to Clowning. As far of safety, we don't have safety concerns in the City right now."
VanLeeuwen says if you see anyone wearing a clown costume in Woodstock you should call their dispatch line at 519-537-2323. You can read the message from the Thames Valley District School Board in regards to Clowning on their web site here.
