Coyote Safety

Ministry of Natural Resources is reminding everyone there is no need to fear coyotes.

WOODSTOCK - The Ministry of Natural Resources says there is no clear indication why more coyotes are showing their faces in Oxford County, but reminds pet owners to be vigilant.

Aylmer District's Management Biologist Kyle Stanley says there are a few simple steps to avoid placing your pets in danger: "keep pets inside at night; keep your dogs on a leash when walking through natural areas; clean up after your dog, as coyotes can be attracted to dog feces; spay and neuter your dogs, coyotes can be attracted to and successfully mate with domestic dogs."

Stanley says while coyotes are human-shy, there are ways to protect yourself during a run-in with them.  "Never approach or touch a wild animal; don't turn your back or run from it - back away from the animal while remaining calm; stand tall, wave your hands, make lots of noise; carry a flashlight at night."

Stanley advises homeowners to remove any garbage or pet food near their homes as another way to deter coyotes.
