Crime Rates Down in Woodstock

Woodstock is running in the middle of the pack when it comes to the rate of crime across the country. Statistics Canada is out with its Crime Severity Index today, placing Woodstock 111th out of 239 communities in Canada. That's a 6.5% crime decrease, and violent crimes are down 9.4%. Woodstock Police Chief Rod Freeman is pleased with the results. "I think as good as these statistics reflect for Woodstock, we can always do better. And I think everyone of us in town here wants nothing more than the safest community we can possibly be. So, we'll take those stats, we'll be pleased with them for the time being, but we'll try to improve on them in the future." Nationally, it was the eighth consecutive decrease in Canada's crime rate. Statistics Canada says since peaking in 1991, the crime rate is now at its lowest point since 1972. But while there was an overall decrease in the national crime rate, there are trouble areas. There were more homicides, sexual offences against children, and impaired driving offences last year, than in 2010. Here's a break down of how Woodstock ranks: Overall Crime Severity Index = weighted value of 72.8 (6.5% lower than 2010) placing us 111th on the list of 239 communities Crimes of Violence = weighted value of 51.8 (9.4% lower than 2010) placing us 149th on the list of 239 communities Non-Violent Crimes = weighted value of 80.9 (5.7% lower than 2010) placing us 99th on the list of 239 communities
