Tougher rules start January 1, 2016 for users of E-Cigarettes
OXFORD COUNTY - If you're under 19 and enjoy an e-cigarette, come January 1, 2016 you wont be able to buy them.
The provincial government introduced legislation Monday which would ban the sale and supply of e-cigarettes to anyone under the age of 19 and prohibit the display and promotion of e-cigarettes in places where e-cigarettes or tobacco products are sold, or offered for sale.
Tobacco Control Coordinator with Oxford Public Health Gemma Urbani says they are very excited by the announcement.
"This has been an ask for quite some time of many Public Health Units across the province. It's about protecting our young people and those who do not smoke from becoming addicted."
Urbani says they have heard reports that local youth under 19 are using e-cigarettes. "We hear both sides of the story. We hear people who have used them to try and quit smoking -- though we don't recommend them -- and then we've heard that young people are using them who don't normally smoke so that is a problem. I think they are everywhere. We do have a lot of our tobacco venders in Oxford County who sell them and before this legislation was announced today there was no restriction on who could buy them."
The new legislation will also ban the sale of flavoured tobacco products, with a delayed implementation date for menthol-flavoured tobacco products and increase maximum fines for those who sell tobacco to youth.
"I think any time we take a legislative stance on this, it is going to help," says Urbani. "It is going to prevent them from getting into the hands of young people which could prevent them from smoking."
The new legislation comes into effect January 1, 2016.
