The South-West Oxford Fire Department is providing tips near the end of the Christmas holidays to be safe around your home.
SOUTH-WEST OXFORD - As the holidays wrap up, the South-West Oxford Fire Department is offering advice on fire safety around your home.
They say to dispose of your leftover boxes safely.
Public Education Officer Troy Moffatt says with the amount of wrapping paper people have, they should reduce, re-use and recycle.
"The common items, and there's going to be vast numbers of it, is the wrapping papers. They're all different type of wrapping papers. Some are plastic, some are paper, some are a mixture of both as well as the cardboard boxes and Styrofoam. We certainly suggest to shrink those right down and put them at the roadside, keeping in mind your collection folks that are going to be picking these items up, to make them as handy as possible for them."
He says they don't want you to burn the cardboard boxes in wood stoves because the boxes have chemical binding agents that are harmful to the environment. He adds this makes them very risky to burn in either a wood stove and/or a fire place.
Moffatt says to also make sure your smoke detectors are working properly.
"Make sure the batteries are functional and it's a proper operating smoke detector, as well as carbon monoxide detectors. Don't burn anything in a gas fire place. That's meant to be only used with the supplied gas and/or the propane, whichever the system is. Obviously you want to keep everybody safe so you want to keep the kids away from the fire places, they remain hot even though they're not ignited and as well as wood stoves."
He says during the holiday season they want everyone to be safe.
He adds to practice safe cooking, as people often get distracted with company in their home over the holidays.
