GRCA Issues Whitemans Creek Low Water Warning

Whitemans creek is approaching a historic Level 3 low water advisory. "There's never been one in our watershed, in fact, there's never been one in Ontario." Dave Schultz with the Grand River Conservation Authority says their low water response team will begin looking into filing a report to the province. Whitemans Creek in western Brant County, Blandford-Blenheim and Norwich townships is down to one-third of its normal water flow. That's one requirement in meeting a Level 3 low water advisory. Schultz explains one of the other key requirements the GRCA's Low Water Response Team would have to prove. "The potential for social, economic or environmental harm to be done. What you're talking about is a situation where if things carry on as they are, or get worse, that is could actually lead to harm to the environment, or harm to people that depend on the water, whether it's farms or businesses or so on." In that case, the Ontario Water Directors Committee would step in and dictate who can take water, how much and at what times. In the meantime, residents and farmers that draw from Whitemans creek in Blandford-Blenheim, Brant and Norwich are asked to cut water consumption by 20%.
