As of Tuesday, you're paying more for the power you use. Hydro rates across Ontario are up between 3.3 and 5 per cent, as the Independent Electricity System Operator raised the rates. The reason is the cost of producing electricity rises as the province is utilizing more renewable and nuclear sources. Oxford MPP Ernie Hardeman made a statement in the Ontario Legislature Tuesday, and he says the government's energy policy is not only hurting households, but costing jobs. "We know hydro increases impact jobs. Businesses looking to invest are going to look for a cheaper jurisdiction and for many of our businesses, they are leaving and taking their jobs with them. 2-years-ago, in response to my Oxford business survey, 95% of businesses said hydro prices were having an impact on their company." Hardeman says since the McGuinty Liberals took office in 2003, the price of hydro has doubled.
