Heat Warning Issued for Oxford

Environment Canada is calling for temperatures in the high 30's this weekend with the humidex values at or above 40 degrees Celsius. Program Supervisor with Health Protection Elaine Reddick tells Heart FM who is the most susceptible to the heat. "Anybody can be at risk, but particularly infants under a year, or senior citizens or people with chronic medical conditions, should be careful about getting too much heat and know the risks, you can get heat exhaustion or heat stroke or heat cramps from being outside for too long.

Reddick says the best way to protect yourself is to drink lots of water, try to stay in the shade and make sure you don't spend too much time outside in the hot sun. "Adults caring for children should watch for the usual signs of physical distress, such as rapid breathing, weakness, and headache, as well as symptoms like vomiting, sleepiness, or changes in behaviour, for instance, temper tantrums."

Never leave a child or pet in a car, and remember to check on family, friends and neighbours who are at risk of health complications from heat-related illness. Some prescription or over-the-counter drugs can increase sensitivity to sun and heat. Anyone who experiences physical distress because of extreme temperatures should seek medical attention immediately either by calling 911 or going to the nearest Emergency Department.
