WOODSTOCK - The 17th annual Hike for Hospice raised a remarkable $70,000 this year.
39 teams and 288 hikers participated in the event this year last month at Roth Park in Woodstock. The event is presented by long time partner of VON Sakura House, Toyota Manufacturing Canada. All of the money raised at this event will go to support VON Sakura House, which is the local hospice for Oxford County. The money will be used to support the day to day operations of Sakura House, which only receives partial funding from the Government.
An important highlight of the event was the annual Butterfly Release, when participants in the VON Oxford’s Kids’ Circle program released butterflies in memory of a loved one. Kids’ Circle is a closed eight week program providing supportive care for grieving children aged 5-11 years old who have experienced the death of a loved one. Kids’ Circle runs in tandem with Parents’ Circle, a coordinated and complimentary program supporting the parents or caregivers of the child attending Kids’ Circle.
President of VON Oxford Community Corporation John Goodum says they are really grateful to everyone who volunteered and participated this year.
"We are so grateful to our hikers, families, volunteers and staff who continue to embrace the Hike for Hospice and continue to raise these essential funds for Sakura House. Our hikers want to ensure that the patients and families who follow in their footsteps will receive the same care and compassion they received. They are the driving force behind this meaningful event after 17 years.."
The Hike for Hospice also celebrated VON Sakura’s House 10th anniversary milestone at the event. Over these 10 years VON Sakura House has served 1,543 patients and 6,172 family members with the support
of more than 35,000 donors and 339 volunteers.
