Ingersoll's new Multi-Use Recreation Centre is scheduled to open in 2028.
INGERSOLL - It's a project that's been close to 30 years in the making for the Town of Ingersoll.
We're finally seeing some movement for the new Multi-Use Recreation Centre, also known as the MURC. The project was first talked about in 1997, when the town's original arena had to be replaced. Mayor Brian Petrie says the project picked up again in 2017, but stalled when the pandemic hit in 2020.
Oxford County Council approved the Official Plan Amendment for the project on Thursday, March 11th, 2026, so now crews just have to service the area before shovels hit the ground this year.
Mayor Brian Petrie says the MURC will be a great asset to the community once it opens in 2028.
"We're starting off with one pad of ice, it's expensive so that's why we're starting with one pad in the first phase. It's also going to have a walking track up top, a general use gymnasium, and community space to go along with it."
The town is also planning to add a second ice pad in the future. Petrie says the MURC will be similar to the Bill Gies Recreation Centre in Wellesley once it's completed.
The MURC will be located close to Highway 401, on a property behind the Elm Hurst Inn and Spa. Mayor Petrie says it will be part of a new community campus, that's been collaborative effort from day one.
"South-West Oxford allowed the land to come into Ingersoll and Grobrook Farms worked with us by donating a portion of land to the town. Now we're working with the school board to get a school there, we're working with peopleCare to get long-term care there and then we're going to be doing 20 acres of housing as well."
Mayor Petrie would like to thank all of the town staff members that have worked hard to make all of this possible. He's happy to be sharing some positive news with the town, after the news with CAMI shook the community last year. Mayor Petrie is also getting ready to share more good news with the community at the Breakfast with the Mayor event hosted by the Ingersoll Chamber of Commerce on Thursday, April 9th.
