Hikers laced up their sneakers in support of Oxford County's Sakura House. The 10th Annual Hike for Hospice occupied the trails of Roth Park Sunday morning in Woodstock. The event raises funds and awareness for VON Oxford's Sakura House and this year, organizers hoped to raise $70,000. And as Fund Development Coordinator Kyra McNamara announced yesterday, early numbers indicate the hike was another successful event. The hike raised $83,167.18 with last minute donations and online pledges continuing to be tallied. McNamara will release the grand total later this week on Heart FM. The 10 year total currently stands at $392,437.93. Team Mabee were the top fundraising team for the fifth year in a row and are now in the Top 10 for fundraising teams in all of Canada. Myrtle Jouffret was also recognized for raising over $25,000 the past 5 years. McNamara says she is ecstatic with the event's success, "this is a huge accomplishment, it's a testament to our supporters. The people have come out and hiked for us and collected pledges and helped us raise awareness; for the first many years it was about raising awareness, letting people know that we wanted to build a hospice and than letting them know that it was here and was available to serve all of Oxford County".
