Oxford County Council has heard a delegation from the head of a local homelessness prevention pilot project.
OXFORD COUNTY - Homelessness was one of the many topics of discussion at a recent County Council meeting.
Council heard a delegation from David Grand, the Project Manager behind Oxford's Homelessness Prevention Pilot.
He talked about some of the research being done and how they have had to broaden their definition to include the hidden homeless population.
"We've had to shift our definition a little bit to include individuals who might have shelter but don't have a prospect of long term tenancy. Those could be individuals that are couch surfing, living in motels for example and not by choice often."
Grand also provided some recommendations on how to address the issue; including the implementation of additional outreach services to help those looking for a long term home.
"Examples of that could be system navigation, advocacy and working between the nooks and cranny's of services to walk alongside individuals and provide them with a personal level of support that they might need to access long term housing."
The pilot project has also been able to hire a full time outreach worker, thanks to funding from the federal government.
