What the Health? is a group made up of local youth committed to combating issues that effect our community.
OXFORD COUNTY - Four members of the What the Health? team will be heading to Ottawa for a rally aimed supporting Bill S-5.
The Bill is aimed at making all tobacco packaging plain and standard.
The youth team members will represent Oxford and join over 100 other delegates from across the province at the rally.
Oxford County’s Public Health Youth Coordinator, Michelle Alvey explains why it is such an important cause for the group to tackle.
"Cigarette packs are one of the last ways the industry can legally market their products in Canada, these packs are like mini walking billboards for big tobacco, they are designed to appeal to specific genders, downplay health warnings and make smoking more appealing to youth."
The youth will begin travels on November 8th, the Rally happens on November 9th. Afterwards, the delegates will attend a lunch with MP's followed by attending question and answer period.
The youth group for ages 14-24 tackles a variety of causes, including tobacco use, mental health, nutrition and overall community wellness. If there is a concern among local youth regarding health and wellness, What the Health? can be a great advocate for that cause.
Alvey adds that they are always recruiting new members to be involved.
"What the health? are always looking for new youth who are interested in improving the health of their community and wanting to make change, we can be an excellent tool and resource for those people across the county."
This summer, past and present What the Health? members came together to create a new video that just launched to help get more local youth interested and involved in the group and promoting wellness in the Oxford County community.
