NORFOLK COUNTY - Two people from Norfolk County have been charged with manslaughter following a fentanyl overdose in Simcoe.
Police say 55 year old Lorraine Denis Dawley was found unresponsive on May 4th at a home on Norfolk Street South. The investigation has revealed that she died as a result of a fentanyl overdose.
As a result of the investigation, 45 year old Jeffery Steven McLean and 53 year old Michael Anthony Long have been charged with manslaughter and criminal negligence causing death. Detective Inspector Pete Liptrott of the Criminal Investigative Branch of the Ontario Provincial Police explains why they issued these charges.
"Everyday people are dying of opioid overdoses. Dealers are knowingly distributing these drugs in our communities. As a law enforcement organization, the OPP's role in this crisis is to investigate opioid-related incidences with an acute focus on the apprehension of those who produce, import and traffic these illegal drugs. If you are dealing, you could be dealing the dose that leads to death, and you will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law."
The OPP have investigated 18 occurrences where charges have been laid for Manslaughter and/or Criminal Negligence Causing Death in relation to fatal overdoses since 2016.
