WOODSTOCK - Woodstock Police say motorists are simply not getting the message about driving on closed roads in the Friendly City.
They handed out 31 tickets on Tuesday at the Springbank Ave and James Street intersection to people who were simply ignoring the very visible road closed sign. Police were in the area after getting a complaint about the dangerous conditions in the area.
Constable Nikki VanLeeuwen tells Heart FM why it is not ok to drive on a closed road.
"So basically it's for public safety, so people operating vehicles, pedestrian traffic, it's closed to all those people because the conditions are not safe, so for the safety of construction workers, there are several construction workers in that area and nobody wants to see them get injured, that's the reason why they close the road right down."
VanLeeuwen says another reason the road is closed is to protect your car, as police have responded to several collisions in the area and their have been a few people who have had a tire blow out. She notes they don't like to hand out tickets, however people are simply not getting the message and are showing a blatant disregard for public safety.
