Woodstock's energy usage is being carefully looked at with a new Municipal Energy Plan.
WOODSTOCK - An official Municipal Energy Plan for the City of Woodstock is in the works.
A Municipal Energy Plan observes all the different types of energy used in the community, calculates how much energy is being consumed, and where it is going. Chief Administrative Officer David Creery explains the importance of this information.
"Once you're able to understand the dynamics of energy use in your community, you're then in a position to consider questions about how we can alter that energy system, how we can conserve energy, how can we use it more effectively, and are there ways that we can generate electricity and energy locally."
Creery adds generating our own energy can help the city save money.
"Rough estimate of the amount of money this community spends on energy is well above $100,000,000 a year. If there is an opportunity for us to create that energy source internal to the community we're not exporting our dollars outside of the community, we can become more efficient."
Creery also says internal energy generation makes Woodstock more self-sufficient.
"If we're not reliant on the pipelines and the wires coming into the community, if there's more distributed local generation, then we're not reliant on everything else coming in."
A stakeholder advisory group of about 15 local community members has helped develop this plan since 2014. The Ministry of Energy provided funding in order to have the plan completed by July 2016.
