Drivers will now have to be more aware of how much they have to drink.

OXFORD COUNTY - New impaired driving laws are now in effect.

Police can now demand breathalyzer tests from anyone they pull over. This comes after the new impaired driving laws came into effect on December 18th.

OPP Inspector Shawn Johnson says police can test drivers at anytime.

"So when a driver gets approached by police, they can demand at anytime an opportunity in which they can provide a sample of breath into an approved screen device."

Johnson adds there have been seventy three hundred charges on impaired driving alone, either by alcohol or drug, this year in Ontario.

He says the new laws will keep the roads safer.

"We want to make sure our officers, and the officers throughout the province, are doing all they can to make sure the roads are safe for all the loved ones and family members as they travel throughout the year."
