Norwich Council is applying for a Trillium Grant on behalf of Norwich Minor Soccer to help fund new soccer fields.
NORWICH - Norwich Minor Soccer is trying to raise money to develop some new soccer fields outside the municipal office. About 4.5 acres outside the office will be developed into these fields, for a price of $400,000. So Norwich Council has decided they will apply for a Trillium Funding Grant in order to help.
CAO Kyle Kruger says Norwich Minor Soccer tried applying for the grant by itself but was unsuccessful.
"Minor Soccer itself is not eligible to apply under the new criteria and they have approached other organizations who have run into similar issues. So they have approached the municipality to be the lead on that application and council has approved that."
$150,000 is the maximum amount of money the soccer club could possibly get from Trillium.
Kruger believes the soccer club will really benefit from the new fields in front of the municipal building, instead of the current fields they're using at Emily Stowe Pubic School.
"When they first approached the municipality about this, they demonstrated their need for new facilities and updated facilities; certainly they're experiencing growth for their services. They're also are some restrictions relative to combined use at school locations."
