November is CPR month and the Canadian Red Cross is stressing the importance of having CPR certification.
WOODSTOCK - New polling information shows that 51 percent of people would not be confident to attempt CPR if they saw someone who was not breathing or unconscious.
November is CPR Month which looks to promote the importance of this lifesaving skill.
First Aid Program Representative with the Canadian Red Cross, Kelly Farrell says every year they have a different theme.
"This year we wanted to look at it by the passerby's and a lot of them feel that they have the duty to help others who show signs of not breathing or are unconscious but many people fear they are going to do something wrong and that stops them from helping."
CPR is a skill that Farrell says anyone can learn.
"It takes six hours. It's very simple skills. You're going to learn about the Good Samaritan Act and the legislation around it which seems to be holding people back from helping in these situations according to our poll that was done so we are just encouraging people to take the skills, spend the six hours, learn what is necessary to do it for anyone that is suffering from a cardiac emergency."
Farrell says the course teaches you how to recognize the signs of breathing and circulation emergencies.
"Once you've recognized those, we teach you how to call for help, how to do the actual CPR which is putting the air in, giving your two breathes and 30 compressions to move that around through the blood. CPR techniques help blood flow to the heart and the brain and it buys time until medical experts arrive to give more help."
Farrell says the Canadian Red Cross is offering their CPR courses at 50 percent off for the month of November.
