OPP officers are reminding both kids and adults to exercise caution at prom and graduation parties.
Soon to be high school grads could kick off their new found freedom on a sour note if they aren't responsible at those big end of year parties.
OPP Constable Ed Sanchuk says when it comes to prom and graduation parties, sometimes kids go a little too board.
"Time and time again we're seeing youths drinking alcohol that can't handle their alcohol, or we're getting reports of sexual assault. So we want to make sure that they have fun, behave in a safe and respectful manner, but more importantly a mature manner."
Sanchuk also reminds anyone thinking about hosting a party that they need to have a zero-tolerance policy:
"The law also holds party hosts civilly responsible for any collision or injury involving impaired driving by a guest as a result of alcoholic beverages being consumed in their home. So if you're a party host tell all the invitees in advance about the very strict rules around drinking and driving."
Parents should also have open and honest discussions about underage drinking with their kids, and remind them they have options according the Sanchuk.
"We want our parents to let our kids know - and even myself, I've spoken to my kids - that at any time that there's alcohol involved and they need a ride home, then please speak to your children and let them know that they can call you whatever time in the morning and you'll come get them so you know they're getting a safe ride home."
