OPP are hoping to get Ontario boaters on board with Operation Dry Water.
OPP are hoping to get Ontario boaters on board with Operation Dry Water.
Oxford OPP Media and Community Service Officer Constable Lisa Narancsik says the initiative will focus on making sure everyone is safe out on the water over the long weekend.
"We're going to be watching to reduce the number of deaths and injuries as a result from operating a boat while impaired by drugs or alcohol. It's just like operating a motor vehicle - you are operating a motor vessel, it's just that it's on the water. So if you are caught driving while impaired by drugs or alcohol the same criminal charges will take effect."
Constable Narancsik also reminds us that the rules apply to passengers as well, just as they would for a car. "The liquor laws in Ontario don't permit the consumption of alcohol by anyone on any recreational boat, except for watercraft that has permanent features; meaning it has a washroom, sleeping facility and cooking. And only once they're docked or at anchor. So if they're out cruising around on their big boat they can't be consuming any alcohol."
Constable Narancsik reminds us that it is just as dangerous for non motorized vehicles as well.
"Just to focus not just on the motorize boats, but the boats that people are taking out - so your canoes, your smaller boats that you're going out in, kayaks, things like that. Just to remind the public to make sure they are using their personal floatation devices and not consuming alcohol and not consuming drugs if they're going out in these device to keep themselves safe."
If you are caught operating under the influence, along with the criminal charges, you will also have your driving privileges for all motor vehicles suspended.
