OPP say while safe driving is essential, it's also more important to be safe on highways and roads amid the pandemic.

OXFORD COUNTY - Although traffic is reduced on the roads these days due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of traffic stops has actually increased.

In a recent tweet, OPP Inspector Shawn Johnson says the Highway Safety Division is experiencing a large spike in speeding related incidents on area highways.

"In the last 2 weeks alone, police in West Region have made over 200 traffic stops, speeding in excess of 40 km/hr, 10% of these vehicles have in fact been over 50km /hr an hour, with some almost 100 km/hr over the posted speed limit."

COVID-19 is a priority, however Johnson says traffic safety laws cannot be ignored.

"All of my colleagues are wearing personal protective equipment, making sure we are safe, to make sure you are safe.  So, please know that the OPP and our municipal partners are all committed to the core functions of policing, and that is keeping you all safe."

Driving safely is always essential, however during the pandemic, it is even more imperative to be safe on both the highways and on our local roads.

The surge in pedestrian and bicycle traffic combined with the spike in speeding could be a deadly combination.

Police are trying to reduce crashes so that there isn't the added strain on emergency services during the pandemic.

If you must drive, buckle up, be sure to follow the posted speed limit and look out for pedestrians and bicyclists.

According to the Ministry of Transportation, speed is always a determinant and critical factor in many fatal crashes.

Drivers caught going over 50 km/h the posted speed limit are considered to be performing a stunt and are subject to harsh penalties including a minimum 7 day licence suspension, and a seven-day vehicle impoundment.

Drivers who are convicted of speed racing and stunt driving could also face a hefty fine between $2000 and $10,000.
