Warden David Mayberry is going to be sending a letter to the Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services, asking the province to cover 100 percent of the court security and prisoner transportation costs at the Woodstock Courthouse.
OXFORD COUNTY - Oxford County is going to ask the province to cover 100 percent of the security and prisoner transportation costs at the Woodstock Courthouse.
Warden David Mayberry is going to be sending a letter to the Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services
According to Mayberry, the province said they'd foot the bill about 10 years ago, dedicating $125 million by 2018.
"The problem is they based it on numbers from 2008. Therefore as cost increases, the money they committed in 2008 is nowhere close to where it needs to be. It's going to be about 30 or 40 percent below and they have staged it over a period of time."
The county is looking for an additional $300,000 in order to make up the difference.
Mayberry says the Local Court Security Advisory Committee is working on a backup plan, trying to determine how the whole county could pay the bill if the province says no.
"The committee will be meeting again next week to discuss the more intricate issues around; how do you separate out the prisoner transportation costs and the court security costs and what formula do you use to determine who should pay what."
The city of Woodstock is paying the price right now, even though the courthouse serves all Oxford County residents.
