Oxford's Social Planning Council is trying to find creative solutions to provide transit around the county.
OXFORD COUNTY - Public transportation is one of the key challenges facing Oxford County right now.
Currently people living in Oxford without a vehicle have no way to get around other than by taxi, which can get expensive if you're travelling a long distance.
Warden Mayberry tells Heart FM they are aware of the problem but says it just isn't feasible to have a traditional transit system in Oxford. He says, "We have people living within the County who need to access services in the bigger centres like Tillsonburg and Woodstock and simply can't afford to do so. However the challenge is while we have a need for public transportation, we just don't have the population or the potential ridership to justify it from an economic stand point."
He adds they want to explore some unique ways to provide transit and he wants to look at some of the other service providers who are offering rides in the County, like the Red Cross, and see if there is a way they can work together. He adds the social planning council is looking into the problem and Mayberry is hoping they can come up with some outside the box ideas to help residents get to the services they need.
