Woodstock Police are reaching out with some fun initiatives during Police Week to celebrate their community partners.
WOODSTOCK - The Woodstock Police are bringing back some of their most popular community initiatives for Police Week.
Constable Nikki VanLeeuwen says the week is really about giving credit to the work police do as well as their connection with the people around them.
"It's really a celebration of all the police officers and the community partners that work together to promote a safer community. So this year specifically we're going to be promoting all the different aspects of policing and the different things that we do in the community."
They will be making special stops at elementary schools, and VanLeeuwen says they will be setting up stops near high schools as well.
"We'll be stopping cars at the lunch hour and after school and educating youth drivers about the effects of driving high and driving under the influence of alcohol."
The KISS program will also be coming back, reminding drivers to 'Keep It Safe and Sober' with a small card and some Hershey Kisses. Bike patrol will be keeping an eye out for safe cyclists and handing out coupons for free ice cream.
There is also a special live impaired education event happening at Heart FM. A breath technician will be at the studio while Lainger and Shelby from the Morning Show will be having measured drinks according to VanLeeuwen.
"We're going to be doing breath samples to show the public how those readings work and educate them how quickly impairment comes on to people. So they'll be impaired and have to do some games and we'll be live commentating about how alcohol affects people's ability to do certain tasks."
The officer will be going on air to talk about how the test is going. Some of the tests will also be shown on Periscope - follow Heart FM on Twitter to see the whole thing play out.
