The Oxford NDP Riding Association is encouraging members of the public to voice their thoughts on the proposed federal riding changes for Oxford County.
OXFORD COUNTY - The President of the Oxford NDP Riding Association is looking to shine a light on proposed federal boundary changes for Oxford County.
Canada's independent elections commission takes a look at the current boundaries for electoral districts every 10 years following a census.
Matthew Chambers tells us about some of the changes currently being proposed for Oxford.
"Under this proposal, we would be losing the communities of Banner, Thamesford, Medina, Uniondale, Kintore, and the entire town of Tillsonburg. We would be gaining a very large portion of Brant County including the communities of Paris, Burford, Scotland, and Oakland."
He says the municipalities we lose would become a part of another riding.
"Banner, Thamesford, and Kintore would be incorporated in the riding London-East. That means people in Thamesford would be voting alongside people in the east end of London."
Tillsonburg would become a part of the Haldimand-Norfolk riding. Uniondale and Medina would be incorporated into the new riding of Elgin-Middlesex-Thames.
The Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission for Ontario is currently accepting feedback and Chambers is encouraging members of the public to participate. Written submissions will be accepted until September 25th and a public hearing will be taking place at the Ivey Spencer Leadership Centre in London on Friday, October 28th starting at 6:30 p.m.
