The County of Brant would like to remind drivers to drive safely as they hope to do their best clearing roads this season.
BRANT COUNTY - The harsh Canadian winter is upon us once again and the County of Brant wants to ensure that its roads are safe.
With 1,150 km of roads to cover the County of Brant will try their best to cover all areas of the county. However, if plows can't reach your area drivers are urged to travel safely as it can be treacherous at times. The county plans to increase the use of sand to help with road conditions instead of salt as, ice has a major impact on roads and the environment. Mike Tout, Director of Roads in the County of Brant has more on the use of salt on roads.
"Salt is often spread early in an event to reduce ice formation and to aid in snow removal operations."
Anti-icing liquids will also be used in areas to directly impact snow removal in a timely manner. The liquid will dry out on the road and will be reactivated later on from moisture from precipitation.
The effectiveness of salt is assisted by the sun as it warms up the salt. Tout had this to say on salt as well.
Sand is also used at higher temperatures if traction is required immediately, particularly on hills, curves, bridges, intersections and snow-packed roads.
The county is looking into the use of different ways they can control and reduce the use of salt this season.
It's also a good reminder that winter storms kill Canadians more then any weather disaster combined. For information on how to prepare for a winter storm visit: www.brant.ca/emergencyplanning. The County's website offers winter storm preparedness information, links to an interactive road condition map and a checklist for your car emergency kit.
