Tillsonburg Town Council has scheduled a special meeting Friday to begin selecting a new Mayor
TILLSONBURG -- Another development in Tillsonburg Town Council's search for a new mayor.
Monday's meeting saw a resolution by Deputy Mayor Mark Renaud to hold a special meeting set for Friday morning to begin selection on the new Mayor of Tillsonburg.
Councillor Marty Klein says he spoke to the resolution for a Friday meeting and supported it.
Klein, a candidate for mayor in the October election, later chose not to stand for the mayoral vacancy during the interim. Deputy Mayor Mark Renaud, also in running for mayor this fall, agreed to the same.
"In fairness to the process, because both Mark and I are candidates for the mayor's position in October and to avoid any conflict or split among council, that I would not be accepting a nomination to sit as the interim mayor, but I would rather that council select that from amongst themselves."
Klein says timing of outgoing Mayor John Lessif's resignation provides council with a challenge as to who will succeed in the meantime.
"Because it's in less than a year of the election and still more than 90 days before the election, we have to fill the position. It's going to be tough to make choices amongst your colleagues, but that goes with the turf."
Klein says if council chooses an interim mayor amongst the remaining four councillors, they'll have to collectively fill the council vacancy as well.
There are a number of ways the council position could be filled and Klein says his preference is to select the first runner up from the 2011 ballot.
Other options include advertising to the community for interested parties, or have council select anyone they choose to fill the remaining vacancy.
Tillsonburg Town Council will meet for what is a special public meeting Friday at 8:30 AM.
