A powerful presentation was put on by Survivor Voices Oxford Tuesday afternoon. Women shared their stories on the domestic violence and abuse that they've faced throughout their lives. Many of them could not talk outside the presentation for their safety. Kirsten Stevenson with Survivor Voices was pleased with the turnout. "We had a full house and it was really nice to see all of the people that came out: women from the shelters, social service workers, police, and other people that were just interested in what we were presenting," said Stevenson. The organizations impact images were unveiled at the luncheon. Stevenson comments on her favourite: "There was one of a bird that was stuck in a corner. It had a big impact just in the way that you feel cornered, you feel like you have no resources. People from the outside looking in think 'why doesn't she leave,' but people don't understand the reason why women don't leave and sometimes can't leave." The images will be available to look at on the Survivor Voices website in December. T-shirts were also hung with the names of women and children who have been killed due to domestic violence and abuse (seen in photo). Stevenson hopes the days events were inspiring: "We really want to raise awareness and let people know that, it's a very dark subject, but at the same time if women have the proper resources for themselves and their children, there is a light at the end of the tunnel and there is hope, and I think that's what we showed here today."
