More organizations in Oxford County will have access to a life saving drug, that helps reverse opioid related overdoses thanks to some additional funding.
Oxford County Public Health has expanded the Take Home Naloxone program thanks to funding from the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care.
Today they trained representatives from 4 organizations on how to administer Naloxone.
They are Ingamo Homes, Oxford County Community Health Centre, Addiction Services of Thames Valley and CMHA Oxford.
Supervisor in Health Protection Joanne Andrews says Naloxone is a life saving drug.
"Nalaxone is a drug that can reverse the effects of an opioid related overdose, so if someone has an overdose from an opioid, the Nalaxone can reverse the effects of an overdose."
Andrews says the hope is that by distributing more Naloxone kits and providing training on to prevent an overdose, more lives can be saved in Oxford County.
"With reports in our region of illicit fentanyl being mixed into other street drugs, there is a greater risk for an overdose. Illicit fentanyl can't be detected by sight, smell or taste, so it is very easy for someone to unknowingly take it, and it only takes a small amount to cause an overdose. That’s why expanding the distribution of Naloxone kits and training is an important step in preventing overdoses. We hope community agencies who work with clients that are using opioids will take the opportunity to receive this vital training, as it could potentially save a life or lives."
With the new funding several organizations are now eligible for Naloxone training and kits. They include:
- Community Health Centres
- Aboriginal Health Access Centres
- AIDS service organizations
- Shelters
- Withdrawal management programs
- Outreach programs
