OXFORD COUNTY - More traffic calming measures will be brought to Drumbo, Plattsville, Bright, and Harrington.
Last night's County Council meeting saw unanimous support to add more speed feedback signs, and lane narrowing to cause drivers to naturally drive slower.
Councillor Brian Petrie says this isn't enough, noting how local residents learn to ignore these methods over time.
"That's where my hesitation comes from. Certainly traffic calming is a tool but its not a be all end all answer to the problem"
Petrie instead looks for increased enforcement from OPP to keep roads safe. However, Warden Marcus Ryan believes the traffic calming measures are more effective.
"I don't think enforcement is the answer to be honest. I know a lot of residents ask for enforcement but to me what I observe and certainly when I talk to the OPP what they tell me is the case is that enforcement on an intersection or on a given road slows traffic down while the enforcement is there and maybe for a few days or a week after the enforcement is there, and then the speeding returns to the comfortable way that is was before."
Some methods of road narrowing that will be used include centre median islands, chicanes ("bump outs"), and semi-mountable raised curbs. Farming equipment and transport trucks will still be able to pass through these obstacles according to the council's presentation.
