WOODSTOCK/NORWICH - It was a successful holiday season for the local Salvation Army.
It came very close to its fundraising goal of $242,000, falling less than $3,000 short. The kettle campaign raised almost $63,000, surpassing its $60,000 goal by $3,000 and the 2024 kettle total by $11,000.
Major Kristen Adams is the Core Officer and Core Ministries Officer for Woodstock and Norwich. She says it was a good year of progress, adding they did have some new volunteers stepping forward this year.
"We had a successful year! We did have some challenges with volunteers and we probably could have done more if we had all of the volunteer shifts covered, but we are celebrating that we managed to surpass the $60,000 goal that we set for the kettles this year."
Adams would like to thank the 48 volunteers that collected donations at their five kettle locations over the holidays.
She would also like to thank who donated non-perishable food items in person or through a food drive. They received about 30,000 pounds of food, which should stock the Hope Market shelves for the next few months.
The Salvation Army supported about 700 families through Christmas assistance this year, providing them with gift cards so they can buy what they need. It also serves about 300 families through the Hope Market each month.
Adams grateful for the community's support, during the holiday season and year round.
"Often the Salvation Army gets the thanks for the work that we do in our community, but we really want to extend that thanks back to all of those who contributed time, food, or monetary donations to make that possible. We do what we do because the community does what they do so well."
