Fire crews had to battle flames at an apartment building in Woodstock and at the Sushi Cove restaurant this morning.
WOODSTOCK - It was a busy morning for the Woodstock Fire Department who were called out to two fires today.
The first call came at 4:40 this morning after getting word of an apartment fire on Chieftain Street. Smoke was coming from the front door and the fire started in the bathroom. Crews were able to extinguish the flames quickly, preventing it from spreading to the rest of the apartment.
Estimated damage to the unit is $5,000 and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
The second fire happened at 9:00 am at the Sushi Cove restaurant located at 930 Dundas Street.
Fire crews were called after someone noticed smoke coming through window. Firefighters arrived to the scene quickly and discovered a wood table was on fire in the kitchen. Another quick offensive fire attack contained the fire spread to the area of origin and limited damage to the building.
The cause of this fire was improper handling of ignition source or ignited material with an estimated loss being $40,000.
“Fire safety is a partnership, ensuring that all required tests/inspections are completed in compliance with the Ontario Fire Code is great and we commend the building owners of 600 Chieftain for ensuring this occurs” says Deputy Fire Chief Jason Whiteley. “However, we have another instance that presents an opportunity to better educate a business owner by reassessing an operational practice and provide fire safety information/practices, and determine a better, safer way to achieve their desired results.”
