Upper Thames River Conservation Authority Hits 20 Year Mark in Educating Students

The River Safety Education Program has helped over 55,000 students since it's inception 20 years ago.

OXFORD COUNTY - The Upper Thames River Conservation Authority is celebrating 20 years of their River Safety Education Program.

They've helped educate more than 55,000 grade 2 students from schools on the watershed since 1998.

Community Education Supervisor Vanni Azzano says they send UTRCA officials into the classroom.

"We do four activities with them where they meet their friends Splish and Splash. We read them a story called The Journey of Splish and Splash where they're told to stay safe around rivers and streams."

The kids also read a story about the water cycle, construct watershed puzzle and play Splish and Splash bingo with safe and unsafe water practices. 

Azzano says they have received a positive response from students and teachers throughout the years.

"When we call the school to tell them we have funding through a service club or local community group to come to their school they're very happy."
